The Triad of Learning: 3 ‘C’ in Workforce Development

Learning is a fundamental pursuit for all of us. We often hear people say, “I’ve learned a lesson” as a testament to their growth. Employers, on the other hand, aspire for their workforce to commit to ‘continuous learning.’ But do we truly understand what effective learning entails?

In the context of workforce development, learning comprises three essential components: Comprehend, Contextualize, and Carry out.

Comprehend: The Art of Understanding

Comprehension is the foundation of learning. It represents the capability to understand business for it’s value, terms, statistics, or situations deeply, gaining conceptual insight. To be a true learner, one must not merely skim the surface but dive into the depths of understanding. Comprehension equips individuals with the knowledge needed to navigate complex business scenarios.

Contextualize: Bridging the Gap to Real-World Application

Contextualization is the next step. It’s about taking the insights gained and relating them to real-world business situations. This process bridges the gap between theory and practice, helping individuals apply their understanding effectively. A concept grasped in isolation becomes a valuable asset when placed in the context of the business world.

Carry-Out: Transforming Knowledge into Action

Carry-out is where learning reaches its pinnacle of development. It’s about performing the actions required – communicating, collaborating, and co-creating value. Knowledge, without action, remains dormant. To truly learn and develop, one must apply what they’ve comprehended and contextualized. It’s in the act of carrying out that real growth occurs.

These three components of learning create a dynamic equilibrium in the workforce, enabling individuals to evolve and facilitate change and transformation – and eventually preparing the culture for future of learning and work. Learning and development (L&D) often follow a cycle of Skill-Reskill-Upskill, and in addition to what individuals do, they must strengthen their fortitudes in Learning Agility, Change, and Adaptability!
